Whatsoever Things are True

Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. Philippians 4:8

Today marks the beginning of a weekly series exploring Philippians 4:8. Over the next six weeks we will be reading this verse and learning how we can apply it to our families. Here is a schedule of the study:
June 26th- Whatsoever Things are True
July 17th- Whatsoever Things are Honest
July 24th- Whatsoever Things are Just
July 31st- Whatsoever Things are Pure
August 7th- Whatsoever Things are Lovely
August 14th- Whatsoever Things are of Good Report
In the technology age we live in, we are bombarded by information daily. I follow a number of bloggers on Facebook, so my feed is full of posts from these bloggers. On Pinterest the DIY pins are too numerous to count and on Instagram, pictures of what so-and-so ate for lunch are boundless. But in the midst of all this information, what is true?

It all comes down to John 8:31-36
31 Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;
32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.
33 They answered him, We be Abraham's seed, and were never in bondage to any man: how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free?
34 Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin.
35 And the servant abideth not in the house for ever: but the Son abideth ever.
36 If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.
I believe that is what Paul was meaning when he wrote the words, whatsoever things are true. The salvation Jesus so freely gives to those who believe in Him, that is what's true.
How can we seek the truth in the daily push of information, especially when it comes to our children? I can only think of one way to do that. Dig in God's Word. Read the Bible daily and study what it says. Then think on the things you read. Dwell on the promises He has given us and the lovely poems from the Psalms. Talk to your children about them.

And most of all, give glory to God for the truth that sets us free. Because if it wasn't for Him sending His only begotten Son, we would be in bondage.
